Good cause - will fill in the petition.
This is something I feel quite strongly about, but I think most people, including many of the protest
groups are not standing back and looking at the big picture. There is a real need for something to fill the role previously played by post offices. However, it does not make sense to simply try and preserve the
old-fashioned style post office for this role. Many of the things we used to use the post office for have changed and the traditional style outlet cannot continue unchanged. What we need is a radical new
approach to a new facility that services local communities. This would retain some of the facilities of the old post offices (e.g. posting of parcels, special delivery, etc), but would be a very different animal incorporating, for example, multi-brand banking (I know the PO pretend to do that just now, but I'm talking about doing it properly), access to help and advice on local and national government services, specialist facilities for the elderly and disabled, etc, etc. Tinkering round the edges is a waste of energy and will just result in 90% of POs closing - this needs a totally new concept to preserve the community... that's my two-pence worth anyway! :-)
Keep up the good work. |
